Roman Gladiator Games & Executions // 1st Century AD
Product Description
Ancient Rome, 1st Century AD. Heavy Samian ware ceramic pottery shard from a large vessel depicting gladiatorial games and executions. Within view, above a laurel band, can be seen leaping lions and hounds, the tied up figures about to be mauled and eaten just out of frame. Roman gods and goddesses would have been depicted around this scene, which was a well known one from antiquity. This would have been part of a large bowl or tray used as table-ware in a high-class household in ancient Rome.
