Product Description

Ancient Roman North Africa, c. 5th Century AD. Incredible Roman redware ceramic fragment from the famous Achilles scene! It depicts a wonderfully detailed child holding hands with his mother, a tree and temple behind them. This is a fragment from a large and richly decorated lanx (rectangular platter). The original lanx would have been impressively large, the border decorated with scenes from the life and triumphs of Achilles during the time of the Trojan War. See Herrmann & Van Den Hoek, "Light in the Age of Augustine", plates 78-79 for various scenes from this lanx. The scenes from this lanx are also hand illustrated in the definitive Tanike Zwicschen reference on Redware from the Roman world. Measures 3.25”L x 2.125”H. Ex Mark Reid, The Time Machine, New York.Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
